Helen Cook, age 94, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home died June 4, 2012, at the Home.
A Funeral Mass will be Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Helen was born in Boone on May 18, 1918, the daughter of John and Myrtle (Smith) Kirkwood.
She graduated from Boone High School in 1936.
On June 15, 1943, Helen married Richard Cook in Chicago, Illinois.
She was a homemaker and worked as a receptionist for her husband at Boone County Tax Service during the income tax seasons.
Helen was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Catholic Women’s Study Club, and ABWA.
She enjoyed sewing and crocheting, reading, cooking, bowling, attending musical concerts, and playing golf with her husband.
In high school, Helen was an All State violinist and in earlier years, she served as a Cub Scout den mother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister Alice Tonsfeldt.
Helen is survived by three sons: Dr. John Cook and wife Jane of Boone, Jim Cook and wife Anita of Corvallis, Oregon, and Jeff Cook and wife Beth of Davenport; five daughters: Judy Lamb and husband Dick and Julie Spiess and husband Joe, all of Iowa City, Jean Tweed of Lakewood, Colorado, Jo Cook of North Liberty, and Janet Hartje and husband Lloyd of Woodbury, Minnesota; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a Vigil service will be at 7 p.m.
Visitation continues on Saturday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
In memory of Helen, memorials may be directed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, the Eastern Star Masonic Home, or the Boone County Hospital Foundation.
