Obituary for Charles "Chuck" Lovin

Charles H. Lovin, age 97, of Boone and the Westhaven Community, joined his “sweetie”, Lorraine, on June 3, 2017.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 9, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Cue and Chaplain Jeff McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Charles Herbert Lovin was born January 16, 1920, in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Flossie (Atchison) Lovin. He was a graduate of Hansell High School in Hansell, Iowa where he played baseball and basketball. Chuck received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Upper Iowa University and was a member of the Peacocks basketball team. This is where he started playing fast pitch softball and eventually pitched 400 games. At UIU, Chuck met his future wife, Lorraine Walker. After graduation, he served 4 years in the United States Navy as a corpsman during World War II. On June 2, 1946, Lorraine and Charles were married and soon both began long careers in education.

They taught in Williams, Iowa, for 5 years. Their first child, daughter Shellane, was born during this time. The family moved to Boone in 1951 and son Charles was born. Chuck taught at Boone Junior High for 31 years and coached high school girls’ basketball and golf.

Chuck was an avid golfer and continued to play weekly until the age of 96. For over 60 years he enjoyed playing cards with his buddies. Lorraine and Chuck traveled frequently and spent many winters in Arizona. In retirement, the couple often visited former students. Charles was a 65 year member of the First United Methodist Church. Many other memberships included the Boone Educators Association, Boone Lions Club, Boone Golf and Country Club, American Legion Post #56, V.F.W. Post # 817, he was a Boone Pufferbilly Chairman, and was a member of the first Boone County Freedom Flight.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; Lorraine, his wife of 67 years; a sister, Florence Smith; and a brother, William Lovin. Survivors include a daughter Shellane Lovin Dannatt (Marty) of Johnston; son Charles W. ‘Chuck’ Lovin (Claudia) of Boone; grandsons, Jeremy Lindahl (Yolanda) of Northridge, CA.; Jason Lindahl (Rachel) of Lake Forest, CA., Ben Lovin (Kandi) of Rosemount, MN., and Brent Lovin (Stefanie) of West Des Moines; great grandchildren, Preston, Anthony, Stella, Juliet, Jackson, Ella, Harper, Charlie, and Madi; a brother, Karl Lovin of Albert City; brother-in-law, Waldo Walker (Rita) of Grinnell; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends.

Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.

On Friday, friends may call at the Church from 8:30 a.m. until service time.

In memory of Charles, memorials may be directed to the family to be gifted to Boone community charities and organizations at a later date.
