Obituary for Donald W Silver

Don Silver, age 93 of Boone, passed away September 22, 2017 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 25, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Squire Boone Cemetery, south of Boone.

Donald Wayne Silver, was born in Leon, Iowa on February 5, 1924, the son of Howard and Fern (DeSart) Silver. Don graduated from Lamoni High School in Lamoni, Iowa in 1942. On December 11, 1943, Donald married Vivian Waechter at the Walnut Park Church in Independence, Missouri. During World War II, Polio kept Don out of the service, but both he and Vivian worked at the North American Bomber Plant in Kansas City assembling B-25’s. He attended the University of Nebraska from 1945 to 1946. Don was a dry cleaner for 42 years. He owned/operated the former North Side Cleaners, at 11th and Story Streets in Boone for 25 years, retiring in 1987.

During retirement, Don wrote a book “Searching for Nathan Boone” which was published in 2000. He was a former member of the Boone School Board and Noon Kiwanis, volunteered at the Boone County Museum, sponsored a North Side Cleaners bowling team, and in earlier years, served as pastor of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at West Third and Marion Streets for several years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Lyle Silver and brother-in-law Robert ‘Bob’ McGrath. Don is survived by his wife, Vivian of Boone; a daughter, Carla (Jeff) Toms of Boone; three sons, Richard (Barbara) Silver of Dover, Florida, Ronald (Mindy) Silver of Bettendorf, and Roger (Shelly) Silver of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren: Michelle Jungling of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Richard (Natalie) Silver of Woodstock, Georgia, Timothy Silver, Steven Silver, Lorraine (Paul) Pelzer, and Brenna Forsberg, all of Bettendorf, Brian (Jody) Toms and Kayla (Justin) Lindgren all of Boone, and Leah Silver and Dalton Silver, both of Des Moines; 13 great grandchildren: Nathan, Clayton, Zachary, Charles, Keenan, Mia, Joshua, Madison, Abby, Eli, Ethan, Steele, and Kane; two brothers, Max Silver and companion Bill Orley of Palm Springs, California; Sister-in-laws Ruth McGrath of Independence, Missouri and Lois Silver of Seattle, Washington.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m., at which time the family will be present. On Monday, friends may call from 8 a.m. until service time at 1:00.
