Obituary for Eric J. Sayre

Eric Sayre, age 64, of rural Boone, died October 31, 2016 at the Boone County Hospital. A Funeral Mass will be Friday, November 4, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in campus town in Ames with Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery northwest of Gilbert.
Eric Jay Sayre was born in Carroll, Iowa on September 26, 1952, the son of Carl and Louise (Penning) Sayre.
He graduated from Ames High School in 1970 and attended DMACC in Ankeny, taking parts specialist training. On August 21, 1976, Eric married Mary Hadaway at St. Peter & Paul Church near Gilbert.
For over 30 years, Eric worked in the parts departments of several area car dealerships including, Moffitt’s Ford and Pat Clemons Chevrolet in Boone, George White Chevrolet in Ames, Betts Cadillac and Beckley Auto in Des Moines, and Clement Auto in Ft. Dodge. For the last 9 years, he was parts department manager for Halvorson Trane Comfort Solutions in Clive.
Eric enjoyed his ‘39 Chevy street rod, music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, BBQ, the outdoors, traveling to Alaska, and being a Makers Mark Ambassador. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, which were the love of his life.
Eric was born with Cerebral Palsy and tried to be a day to day role model, not letting his condition bother him.
At his death, Eric’s eyes and tissue were gifted.
He is preceded in death by his father. Eric is survived by his wife Mary of rural Boone; three sons, Matt (Lyndsay) Sayre of Ankeny, Travis (Traci) Sayre of Bondurant, and Damien (Emily) Strait of Webster City; a daughter, Courtney (Patrick) Axline of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Louise Sayre of Boone; a brother Brad Sayre of Anamosa; six grandchildren, Parker and Fynley Sayre, Cooper and Tegan Axline, and Myra and Brooklyn Strait.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Thursday from 3 until 8 p.m. where a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. The family will be present beginning at 5 p.m.
On Friday, friends may call at the Church from 9 a.m. until service time. In memory of Eric, memorials may be directed to the family.
