Obituary for James Shannon

James ‘Dan’ Shannon, 94, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died at the Eastern Star Home on Friday, August 4, 2017. Following James’ wishes, he has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., in the Chapel of the Eastern Star Home, Rev Brian McNamara will be the Officiant. Burial of his cremains will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Nevinville, Iowa at a later date.

James Daniel Shannon was born on March 29, 1923, in Spaulding, Iowa, the son of Lloyd Dell and Gladys Milree (Choate) Shannon. On November 26, 1946, James married Alice Oshel in Atchison, Kansas.

Over the years, Dan worked as a farmer near Boone and Ogden and in Union County for Cheers Farms. He also hauled gravel for Hallett Construction in Boone.

Dan loved raising and showing Belgian draft horses. He would spend time at horse sales and horse shows at the Iowa State Fair. He was a member of the Belgian Draft Horse Association. Dan was always willing to help his neighbors but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jason Shannon; two sisters, Dorothy Radke and Eileen Everling; son-in-law, John McGovern.

Dan is survived by his wife, Alice of Boone; seven children, Janet McGovern of Ankeny, Jill (Fred) Willrich of Ankeny, John (Linda) Shannon of Coal Hill, Arkansas, James ‘Jim’ (Sheri) Shannon of Arispe, Julie (Tim) Dannen of Boone, Jean (Joe) Brooks of Ogden, and Jay (Peggy) Shannon of Oak Harbor, Washington; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; five siblings, Charles, Don, Dean, Mary Drury, and Iris Smith.
