Obituary for John Harrison

John Harrison, age 91 of Boone, died April 30, 2017 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Cue officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

John Franklin Harrison, was born in Adel, Iowa on March 26, 1926, the son of Charles and Genevra (Mills) Harrison. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. John served with the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater receiving a Bronze Battle Star.

On August 26, 1944, John married Betty Jean Atherton in Jefferson, Iowa. Betty died in 2002. On July 17, 2004, John married Rosalie (Rinehart) Hamilton in Boone.

John worked at the former Otis and Yegge Lumber Yards in Boone as a carpenter. From 1956 to 1984, John served the City of Boone as a professional fire fighter and also as a self-employed carpenter and built 16 homes in Boone. He then served 20 years as Boone County’s Veteran Affairs Director, retiring in 2006.

John loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking, traveling, dining out, yardwork, and in earlier years, hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #56, a life member of the V.F.W. Post #817, Loyal Order of Moose #104, and the former B.P.O.Elks in Boone. John was a member of the first Boone County Freedom Flight.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, three brothers, Earl, A. Faye, and Mel Harrison, and a sister, Evora Bauer. John is survived by two sons, Steven Harrison and wife Debbie of Laguna Niguel, California, and Scott Harrison of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Susan Kratz and husband Doug of Boone; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and his wife Rosalie of Boone.

Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, at Sixth and Marshall, on Wednesday from 3 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.
On Thursday, friends may call at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or the Israel Family Hospice House.
