Obituary for Kenneth Shuey

Kenneth ‘Ken’ Shuey, age 78 of Boone, died June 17, 2017, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Following his wishes, he has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be Monday, June 26, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Chaplain Randy Allman officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Kenneth Ray Shuey was born in Boone, Iowa on August 14, 1938, the son of Walter and Margaret (DeVoogd) Shuey. He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1955 and graduated from Boone High School in 1956, . Ken served 31 years in the National Guard and U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1985.

On June 14, 1958, Kenneth married Judy Cheever at Ames, Iowa. Ken worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames for 36 years. He began as manager of traffic inventory, later as assistant manager of facilities, and finally, head of the DOT auctions. He retired October 30, 1996. Ken was a life-long resident of Boone and he enjoyed golf, woodworking, country music, gardening and lawn care.

In earlier years, he coached in and was a past president of the Boone Little League and umpired high school baseball, football, and softball. Ken was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan and for 35 years, served as head statistician for the Cyclones basketball and football games. He and Judy enjoyed wintering at Mission, Texas for several years. Ken was a member of the American Legion Post #56, and former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, B.P.O. Elks, and Boone Lions Club.

Preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Beverly, Ruth, Mary, and Lois; a brother Almo; his in-laws, Ray and Dorothy Cheever; a sister-in-law, Nancy Sayre. Ken is survived by his wife Judy of Boone; one daughter, Sue Brekke (Tom); two sons, Steve Shuey (Ann) and Monty Shuey all of Ames; two brothers, Bob Shuey of Boone and George Ades of Ankeny; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The family will be present and friends may call, at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m.

On Monday, friends may call at the church 9:30 a.m. until service time.

In memory of Ken, memorials may be directed to the family.
