Obituary for Loras "Woody" Woodard

Loras “Woody” Woodard, 70, of Boone, died on September 23, 2017 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, after a battle with esophageal and liver cancer.

A Gathering will be held Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 5:00 P.M., at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, Boone, Iowa. Following the Gathering there will be a time of food and fellowship at the Boone Masonic Lodge, 527 Marshall Street, Boone, Iowa, beginning at 6:00 P.M. On Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. family and friends will meet at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel and process to Linwood Park Cemetery for Burial.

Woody was a Son, Husband, Dad, Granddad, Great-Granddad, and a Friend. He raised four girls and a grandchild, then married Mary Jo Fritch Majors and became a dad to two step-children.

Woody Woodard, was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 25, 1947, the son of Richard “Dick” and Lillian Woodard. He attended Logansport Country School and graduated from Boone High School in 1965. He started working at an early age on the farm. Woody then worked for a local grocery store, Mid-States Steel in Boone, Whatoff’s in Ames, Eagle Iron Works in Des Moines, and finally for John Deere in Ankeny, as a welder for over 29 years until he had to retire for health reasons in 2004.

Woody was a member of UAW Local #450 of Des Moines, Lifetime Member of the NRA, Boone Sportsman Club, Boone Hunt and Fish Club, Boone Moose Lodge #104, and the Boone Pioneer Center. He loved traveling, hunting and fishing, especially his trips to Alaska and Canada. Woody also enjoyed playing cards, skeet shooting and he was a naturally gifted wood worker and jack of all trades.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, relatives and lots of friends over the years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Fritch Majors Woodard; kids; two step kids; grandkids; great grandkids and numerous friends.
