Obituary for Marjorie Garvey

Marjorie Garvey, age 94, of Boone, went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 8, 2017 at the Boone County Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone, with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Marjorie Cecilia (Y'Barbo) Garvey was born on August 2, 1922 in Zwolle, Louisiana, the daughter of James and Louisa (Ebarb) Y'Barbo. She graduated from Chireno High School in Chireno, Texas in 1940. She married Ralph Olson, and to this union Steven and James Olson were born.

After the death of Ralph, Marjorie married Edward Garvey on May 14, 1951 in Boone. In the community, Mrs. Garvey worked at Garfield Elementary School and later, the Eastern Star Masonic Home. She was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart and a longtime volunteer for the March of Dimes. One facebook poster described her as the 'soul of the neighborhood', living in her same house since 1964. She enjoyed sewing, watching television, especially the Hallmark Channel and Little House on The Prairie, cooking, especially spicy foods, and spending time with her family, especially during the holidays. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, Ralph Olson and Edward Garvey, and a son James Olson, a granddaughter Michele Love, five brothers Jim Barbo, Louis, Dennis John, and Norbert Y'Barbo; a sister Frances Strahan.

She is survived by three sons, Steven Olson of Des Moines, Patrick Garvey of Boone, and Michael Garvey and wife Carol of Roanoke, Texas; a daughter, Debra (Garvey) Herman and husband Steve of Howard, Pennsylvania; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Wednesday from 3 until 8 p.m., where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. On Thursday, friends may call at the funeral chapel from 8 until 10 a.m.

In memory of Marjorie, memorials may be directed to the Church of the Sacred Heart.
