Obituary for Mark Stone

Mark Stone, age 61 of Boone, died April 30, 2018, in a work related accident.

Following his wishes, Mark has been cremated. A visitation will be on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, from 4 until 8 p.m. The family will be present from 5 until 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Mark was born in Boone, Iowa on December 17, 1956, the son of Calvin and Ruth (Albert) Stone. Mark graduated from Boone High School in Boone in 1975. During his school years, he was involved with Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Mark also played piano, violin in orchestra, trombone in band, and participated in track and basketball.

Mark studied at DMACC-Ankeny Campus and completed an apprenticeship in Ames to obtain a specialized electrical contractor certification and his electrical license. He established Stone Electric in 1980 and eventually expanded his business to include Stone Rentals and Stone Storage. During this time he began his family, and Mark was blessed with two children, Kim and Jeff, from his first marriage.

Mark was active with National American Motor Drivers & Racers Association (NAMDRA), and loved traveling to car shows. His favorite car was his 1970 Mark Donohue Javelin American Motor Car. He enjoyed drag racing, restoring classic cars, woodworking, his HO scale model train set, and talking to and being around people. Mark planted many trees, and during the Christmas season, those traveling to and from Boone along Highway 30 would see the lights shining on a big, beautiful tree on his property. He started decorating this tree when he found the love of his life, Julia.

On July 7, 2008, Mark married his best friend, Julia Ewing in Niagara Falls, Canada and welcomed her children and grandchildren into his life as his own. True to Mark's form, they attended a car show on their wedding trip, too.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cal. Mark is survived by his wife Julia of Boone; daughter, Kim Stone of Austin, Texas; son, Jeff (Jessica) Stone of Asheville, North Carolina; his mother, Ruth Stone of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; son, Jake Gibbons of Madrid; son, Jeremiah Gibbons of Switzerland; grandchildren, Hayley Fuller, Braden Gibbons, and Macy Gibbons all of Madrid; sister Marla (Mark) Dawson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother, Paul (Sylvia) Stone of Blue Springs, Missouri; brother, Matt (Jill Johnson) Stone of Boone; brother, Ben Stone of Des Moines; sister, Cara Stone of Ames; his dad's wife, Maggie Stone of Boone; and his nieces and nephews.

In memory of Mark, memorials may be directed to the family.
