Obituary for Raymond "Bud" Pepper

Raymond Gerald “Bud” Pepper passed away on January 27, 2017. A Funeral Mass will be Friday, February 3, 2017 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Bud Pepper was born in his parents farmhouse in Boone County on January 24, 1925. He was the fifth of thirteen children born to Ray and Ethel (McGlynn) Pepper. He was nicknamed “Bud” as a toddler because he was his dad’s little “buddy.” As a boy he served as an altar boy for the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church two miles from his home. He walked or rode his pony to a one room school house one mile west of his parent’s farm until he was old enough to go to high school in Story City. He was a star football player for the Roland Story team. He graduated there in 1943. He had met Betty Barnard from Boone at the local roller skating rink and they dated until Bud enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after his graduation. He served in WW II in the South Pacific Theater for 2 years. After being discharged from the Marines, he married Betty on April 4th, 1946 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He moved her to a family farm 1 mile east of his parents’ farm and continued to live there for 71 years.

He loved that farm with its vast views of his fields, pasture, creek, and cemetery. He loved the quality of life it offered. He raised grain and livestock there. He got up early and worked late to keep his well-manicured farm running smoothly. He was good at saving for a rainy day and was a fabulous provider for his 8 children.

Bud preferred to stay close to home enjoying his wife’s cooking and clowning around for his kids and grandkids. He never heard a story he couldn’t embellish with song, dance, or sound effects. Those remaining to cherish his memory are his 7 children: Pam Denning and her husband Darrell Lingelbach, Mark Pepper, Matt Pepper and his wife JoLene, Patti Cook and her husband Kevin, Jeffrey Pepper, Peggy Thomas and her husband Bruce, and Paula Parris and her husband Jeff. Bud is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Betty, and son, Conn Pepper.
Blessed be the memory of Bud Pepper.
