Obituary for Thomas Aubry Hohanshelt

Thomas “Tom” Hohanshelt, 66, of Boone, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Mike Carlson officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery.

Thomas Aubry Hohanshelt was born on February 19, 1951, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Jack and Doris “Peg” (Smith) Hohanshelt. He graduated from Boone High School in 1969. After high school, Tom attended DMACC in Boone where he played Baseball and Basketball. He graduated in 1971 with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts. On August 29, 1981, Thomas married Audrey Karnes at the Central Christian Church in Boone, Iowa. Tom was a facilities mechanic for recreational services at Iowa State University. Prior to working for Iowa State University, Tom worked for Heinrich Envelope in Boone for many years. He was a member of the Tall Corn Antique Car Club, Boone Photography Club, Boone County I Club, and was an officer in the National World War II Glider Pilots Association. Tom enjoyed socializing with friends, collecting old cameras, photography, and especially, driving his 1939 Chevy Deluxe. He took photos of the Iowa Hawkeye Football Games for the Boone News Republican and the Ames Tribune. Tom was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan, he was a kind man who enjoyed spending time with his dogs, Rudy, Zoey and Lacey. Most of all, he dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Peg; two twin daughters in infancy, Amy and Ashley Hohanshelt; sister, Terry Jo Bochmann, and nephew, Todd Ferry. Tom is survived by his wife, Audrey of Boone; three sons, Jason and wife, Melanie of Ankeny, Ryan and wife, Sarah of Winterset, Jared and wife, Holly of Boone; seven grandchildren, Chase, Aiden, Jacob, Easton, Skylar, Brooks, and Mae, and one soon to be granddaughter.

Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, at Sixth and Marshall, on Sunday from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until service time.

In memory of Tom, memorials may be directed to the family.
