Obituary for Virgil Lee Zunkel

Virgil Lee Zunkel, age 85 of Des Moines, died, Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Urbandale Health Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa.

Per his wishes, Virgil has been cremated. Graveside Services will be held at Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bass Point Cemetery, rural Boone.

Virgil Lee Zunkel, was born March 21, 1932 in Ogden, Iowa, the son of Galard and Buelah (Ray) Zunkel. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1950. Virgil served with the United States Navy during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Radioman Third Class and was assigned to the minesweeper, USS. Ruddy. Virgil was united in marriage to Roberta Joanne Robertson on October 18, 1953 in Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1957. Virgil was a member of the First Federated Church of Des Moines.

Virgil worked for Commercial Banks, Savings and Loans and Credit Union in Ames, Boone, Windom, Minnesota, Austin, Texas and West Des Moines. He retired May 31, 1993 from Financial Plus Credit Union in Des Moines (Formally, Meredith Credit Union) as a Finance Manager, CFO. In addition, he was a seasonal Tax Preparer for H&R Block for 23 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Roberta Joanne Zunkel, daughter, Jennifer Osborne and his parents. Virgil is survived by his daughter, Christine Zunkel; his son, Virgil (Andrea) Zunkel Jr.; son-in-law, Shaune (Leigh) Osborne and grandsons, Jamison Osborne, Paul Zunkel, Jordan (Jane) Osborne.

In memory of Virgil, memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines.
