Obituary for David W. Reed

David William Reed, died peacefully at Israel Hospice House in Ames on Friday, November 30, 2018, in the presence of his loving chosen daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Joe Carswell.

He was 75 years old. Born August 10, 1943 in Boone, Iowa, the son of Merle Reed and Mabel (Wingo) Reed, Dave attended elementary school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1962. Dave served six years in the Iowa National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1970. In his high school years and after, Dave worked at J.C. Penney in Boone, remodeled and cleaned apartments for realtor, John Clark, and was employed by Pritchard Bros. Plumbing & Heating for a few years learning the plumbing trade. He also worked as a salesman at Fisher’s Shoe Store, then for Dad & Lad Clothiers for 15 years. During his years at Dad & Lad, he provided a security service to the Boone businesses, making sure all the doors were locked nightly. Dave obtained his Real Estate Broker's license, and enjoyed a real estate career that spanned more than four decades at Boone's Bohlen and Associates, now known as Nerem & Associates. Dave also won the honor to serve as a Boone County Supervisor for five consecutive terms, a career that spanned more than 20 years. Driven to succeed, Dave often exclaimed how much he loved serving as a County Supervisor. A devoted public servant, he never missed an opportunity to serve constituents and was known to proclaim often how much he 'loved' serving as a County Supervisor. Always on the move due to his restless nature, Dave was a man who quickly transitioned from tasks at hand to the next item on his busy agenda. He always had multiple projects in the works and was well known and visible within his home community.

Dave met and grew in love with Patricia (Blomgren), and they were married in 1985. They remained married for 16 years and he enjoyed being a step-father to Pat’s two children, Troy and Angie. Dave and Pat divorced, but Dave remained close to Angie and served as a proud grandfather to Angie's and Joe's three sons. Dave loved being called on to help transport them to and from school and activities, just as he loved helping Angie dig out her flower beds each spring. He rarely failed to take donuts and a Des Moines Register Sunday paper to their house every Sunday.

Dave maintained his real estate office to the end even though he forfeited his real estate Broker's license a few years before his death. He thrived when in the company of people he enjoyed and sought situations in which he could be helpful to them. He had many friends and enjoyed socializing with them at the Tic Toc and, in earlier years, with his poker club members' homes and at McCaskey's in downtown Boone. He enjoyed a close friendship with the entire Nerem family, spending many holidays with them.

Dave was a quick witted, charming gentleman and a friend to many. Dave is survived by Angie and Joe Carswell of Boone, and their sons, Jacob, Isaac, and Drew; his Nerem and Associates family; his brother-in-law, Lou Jones of Boone; several nieces and nephews; his extended family; and the entire community of friends and neighbors he served as a County Supervisor.

He was predeceased by his parents; siblings Marilyn (Reed) Jones and Tom Reed of Boone and Dick Reed of Des Moines; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis (Bloomquist) Reed, of Des Moines.

A Celebration of Dave’s Life, will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Cue officiating. Following the service, Dave requested to be cremated. Burial of his cremains will be in the Squire Boone Cemetery, south of Boone, at a later date. Friends may call at the Church Wednesday morning, from 8 a.m. until service time. The family will be present beginning at 9 a.m.

Those wishing to remember Dave are asked to make a donation to the Boone Area Humane Society.
