Obituary for Gary Van Buskirk

Gary Van Buskirk, age 74 of Boone, and formerly of Des Moines and Mt. Ayr, died April 15, 2019 at his home in Boone.

Following his wishes, Gary has been cremated and a Memorial Mass will be Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.

Gary Lester Van Buskirk, was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 22, 1944, the son of Lester and Hilda (Smith) Van Buskirk. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in Des Moines in 1962 and attended classes at Iowa State University. In 1963, Gary enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was discharged an Aviation Apprentice.

In 1971, Gary began working for the City of Des Moines and worked in the Engineering Department. While working as a square dance caller, he met his future wife, Karen. Gary married Karen (Anderson) Ulrick in Des Moines on March 8, 1981.

On December 28, 2001, Gary retired as an engineering inspector from the City of Des Moines.
The couple moved to Sun Valley Lake near Ellston, Iowa and later moved to Boone several years ago. Over the years, Gary enjoyed working as a RAGBRAI transporter, playing Santa Claus, coaching boy’s baseball, girl’s softball, and playing men’s softball.

He love the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Gary was an avid bow hunter and entered many archery competitions. He also loved race cars, and he attended and photographed regional races especially the Late Model Division. Gary operated “Iowa Weekly Racing” Website on Facebook. He was a member of the American Legion Post #541 of Ellston, Ducks Unlimited, and the Cedar Point Golf Course in Boone.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sheryl Gilmore; two brothers, Chester and Jackie.

Gary is survived by his wife, Karen of Boone; three daughters, Brenda Bond, Ramona Van Buskirk, and Pamela Van Buskirk all of Phoenix, Arizona; two stepdaughters, Kristine (Dan) Parsons of Ames and Kelly (Scott) Blackledge of Park Rapids, Minnesota; a stepson, Michael Ulrick of Parker, Colorado; 11 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.

Friends may call at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Wednesday morning, from 10:00 a.m. until service time. The family will be present during this time.

In memory of Gary, memorials may given to the Church of the Sacred Heart or the Boone Babe Ruth Program, and sent to the family.

An informal Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at the Boone Memorial Park (19th & Tama Streets in Boone) on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from noon until 3 p.m. Please join the family for a time of remembering, food, and fellowship.
