Obituary for Kenneth Gene Walter

Kenneth Gene Walter passed away peacefully at his home in Boone on the evening of April 3, 2018. He was comforted by his wife of 68 years, Maureen Vaughan Walter. They were married in Keokuk, Iowa on September 3, 1949.

Ken was born February 19, 1926 in Keokuk, Iowa, to Olga (Hier) and Roy Walter. After completing secondary school at Purcell High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ken joined the U.S. Navy and served from early 1944 to July 1946. He served aboard the LST-477, and was discharged with final rank of Quartermaster 2nd Class.

As it did for so many others, the G.I. Bill provided Ken with the opportunity to pursue a college education which instilled in him a lifelong love of learning and reading. In 1950 he graduated with a BA in Political Science/Education from the State University of Iowa (now University of Iowa) and added an MA in Education Administration in 1957. He later pursued Education Administration Advanced Studies at Iowa State University.

Ken began his career in education in 1956 at Crete/Monee High School in Crete, Illinois. In 1960 he moved with his family to Boone where he served the United Community School District until 1988. Never one to sit still, he taught part-time at DMACC-Boone Campus from 1986 until his “retirement” in 1991.

Ken’s community service included Boone City Council (1972-1992), Heartland Area Education Agency (1988-2000) and Ericson Public Library Board of Trustees (2000-2017). He was an ISU Extension Lifetime Master Gardener and enjoyed many volunteer hours with Maureen at Reiman Gardens and the Iowa Arboretum. He was a member of Cockleburs and the American Legion. Reading, woodworking, technology, horticulture and writing were some of his many hobbies.

Along with Maureen, survivors include their six children and their spouses: Gerry Walter (Becky), Carol Walsh (Ian), Bruce Walter, Dan Walter (Margie), Mark Walter (Christine) and Catherine Herring (Brian), 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; sister Ruthe Kombrink, her 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren; and sister-in-law Dorothy Vaughan Park, her 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Ken is preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Mitchell, daughter-in-law Pam Walter (Bruce) and nephew Kenneth Gary Kombrink.

Ken will be interred at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. While he requested there be no local service or flowers, he would be honored by memorial contributions made in his name to Ericson Public Library in Boone or the Iowa Arboretum near Madrid.

“I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world”
