Obituary for Ruth Hitsman

Ruth Hitsman, age 87 of Boone, died December 29, 2018 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral Services will be Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Open Bible Church in Boone, with Rev. Phil Waldo officiating. Following the service, Ruth will be cremated and burial of her cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.

Ruth Ilene (Berg) Hitsman, was born in Ellsworth, Iowa on July 3, 1931, the daughter of Olaf and Sadie (Oxenfield) Berg. She graduated from Ellsworth High School and on January 19, 1952, Ruth married Verne M. Hitsman at Napier, Iowa.

Ruth was a long time and faithful member of the Open Bible Church. In earlier years, Ruth provided house cleaning for many Boone residents and also cleaned several local Doctor’s offices. She later worked as a day care provider for the Good Foundations Day Care at the Open Bible Church. Ruth loved watching sports, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, and was an Iowa State Cyclone and Iowa Hawkeye fan. She also enjoyed Norwegian cooking, especially baking kringla, collecting butterfly figurines, and walking to McDonald’s to have coffee and visit with friends. She felt McDonald’s had the best coffee in town. Ruth’s life evolved around her family and her faith.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verne; son, Dennis Hitsman, granddaughter, Rebecca Smalley; son-in-law, Bill Smalley; eight brothers and sisters, Sylvan Berg, Stella Busby, Omer Berg, Inger Scurek, Viola Echelberger, Virginia Krull, Betty Berg, and Byrdie “Bea” Imlay.
Ruth is survived by a son, Terry (Dawn) Hitsman of Boone; a daughter, Cindy Smalley of Boone; daughter-in-law, Jane Hitsman of Boone; a sister, Ruby Grover of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren, Nicholas (Kaleigh) Hitsman of Ankeny, Lisa (Brett) Mount of Boone; Joel Hitsman of Boone, Emily Lebo (Scott) of Des Moines, Sarah (Joe) Knowler of Russell, Mindy Smalley (Christine) of Sarasota, Florida, Christy (Dan) Boyd of Boone, and Amanda (Justin) Schroeder of Boone; 17 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Thursday from 3 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. On Friday, friends may call at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
