Obituary for Anita Marie Clayberg

Anita Marie Clayberg, 76, a longtime resident of Boone, died November 1, 2017 at Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit due to complications of Alzheimer’s.

Private burial will take place at a later date. Visitation is from 3 pm to 7 pm with family present from 5 to 7 at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at corner of Sixth and Marshall in Boone.

Anita was born September 22, 1941 in Hannibal, MO to Walter and Dorothy Moore. She graduated from Muscatine High and declined an Art Scholarship to Chicago to move to Ames, IA with her parents and two brothers, Mike and Larry Moore both of Ames.

One night when out driving her Triumph TR3, she found herself being followed around town. Not having a good day, the 4’11” spunky girl parked her car, jumped out and started yelling at the man who had been following her, demanding to know what he was up to. The man, Dan Clayberg, just wanted to drive her car. They were married 6 months later on February 8, 1964. Two daughters and numerous beloved pets joined the family over the next 53 years.

Anita and Dan lived in several places during their marriage: Grinnell IA, Nevada IA, Knoxville IA, St. Charles MO, Roswell, GA and Flower Mound, TX before moving to Boone to be closer to family. Anita worked for Hallmark, Drs Kollbaum and Barker before it became McFarland Eye Clinic and as a teacher for the 3 year old class for Small Miracles Preschool.

Anita and Dan traveled all over: Hawaii, Europe, and loved going out East. Anita was an avid reader, loved to scrapbook and research family history, spend time with her granddaughters, loved to bake her famous chocolate chip, cranberry nut cookies, and never missed an episode of the Andy Griffith Show (as long as Barney was in it).

Anita made friends everywhere she went. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and constant laughter. She was always cheerful and positive but you never wanted to cross her when it came to her family or animals – she was fiercely protective of those she cared for. Even as the Alzheimer’s took over, she never lost her laughter or her witty comebacks.

Anita is survived by her husband; two daughters, Tanya Clayberg and Sheila Tellinghuisen; her granddaughters, Ashley, Alexis and Natasha Tellinghuisen; her two brothers; numerous cousins; nephews and nieces and her two cats, Penny and Duke.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit at Eastern Star for their wonderful care of Anita over the past year. Memorial contributions can be made to the Boone County Humane Society, 226 W 16th St, Boone, IA 50036 or to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
