Patricia ‘Pat’ Headley, age 85 of Boone, died January 21, 2018 at the Hearthstone Memory Care Unit of the Eastern Star Masonic Home.

Following her wishes, Pat has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall.

Patricia Gertrude (Ivis) Headley, was born in Boone, Iowa on February 5, 1932, the daughter of John and Margaret (Short) Ivis. After her mother’s death, her maternal grandparents, John and Gertrude Short, raised Pat and her three siblings.

Pat graduated from Gilbert Consolidated High School in 1950. She worked at the Boone Telephone office until she married Donald E. Headley on November 12, 1952 in Boone. The couple and their children attended Sacred Heart Church in Boone and lived in Ridgeport. They farmed in the Ridgeport and northeast of Boone areas. The couple later divorced.

Pat attended and graduated from DMACC-Boone Campus in 1971 and received a Licensed Practical Nurses Degree. She worked at the Boone County Hospital and various long term care facilities in Boone and surrounding areas.

Pat moved to Des Moines and worked for many years at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center and as a Catholic Parish nurse until she retired. During retirement, she took great pleasure being a Foster Grandparent in the Des Moines Schools and taught many children how to read and write. She was honored in 2009 by the American Red Cross of Central Iowa, as a “Heroes of the Heartland” award recipient.

Pat’s family and her faith were dearest to her heart. She enjoyed traveling to see her children and crocheted countless winter hats, scarves, and blankets for the Des Moines area homeless. She was also proud of her Irish Heritage and looked forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day every year.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; a sister Peggy Nelson; brothers, Leonard and Hugh Ivis; her former husband Don; an infant son, Lawrence.

Pat is survived by two daughters, Margie (Al) Neely of Mankato, Minnesota and Denise Headley of West Palm Beach, Florida; her sons, Paul (Julie) Headley of Urbandale, and Michael (Chris) Headley of Springfield, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Ross Neely, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Adrianna (Jon)Turner, Laura Headley, Evan Headley all of Des Moines, Emily Headley, Boone, Chelsea (Jake) Smith Aurora, Illinois, and Chanlea Wilkes and special friend, Jason ,of Cedar Falls; two great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Miller of Boone; and extended nieces and nephews.
