Burton LeRoy Patterson was born in Boone, Iowa on August 4, 1936, the son of Fred and Esther (Monson) Patterson. Burton married Ronda Bornholt on June 12, 1960 at the South Marion United Methodist Church.

Burton was the fourth generation to farm the Patterson family farm, established in 1865, south of Stratford. He served briefly in the Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, CA from 1958-1959. In his youth he played fast pitch softball and pitched for several teams including church league and Hanson’s Standard of Ames. While pitching for Hanson’s Standard in 1960 his team made it to the state tournament at Birdland Park in Des Moines and finished in second place. He had a wicked drop ball. Burton served on several boards over the years: Stratford Co-op, Stratford Telephone Co., Stratford Community Development Corp., Stratford School Board, Lions Club and South Marion Church Board. Burton loved his country and showed his patriotism by shingling the American flag onto the barn roof with the help of his son-in-law, Matt. His favorite job in retirement was driving the school bus for 18 years. He loved all the school kids and they loved him back. He especially loved spending time on the farm with his two grandsons, Isaac and Heath. They were the apples of his eyes. Burton enjoyed fishing and boating with family and friends, planting pumpkins and gourds with Ronda for their Fall Market, and watching the Cubs. He even took a trip to Chicago with family to see the Cubs on Father’s Day in 2016, the year they won the World Series. He must have brought them good luck. Burton will forever be our sunshine.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ivan and Wendell Patterson. Burton is survived by his wife, Ronda of Stratford; one son, Nolan Patterson and wife, Julie of Stratford; two daughters, Natalie Cantwell and husband, Matt of Jacksonville, Florida; and Mia Patterson of Newport Beach, California; two grandsons, Isaac and Heath Patterson of Stratford. And his beloved dog Norval.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in memory of Burton.
