Obituary for Alma Johnson

Alma Johnson, age 95, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died Monday, April 1, 2019 at the Home.

Alma has been cremated and a private family graveside service and burial, will be held in the Squire Boone Cemetery, south of Boone, at a later date. There will be no visitation hours.

Alma Ruth (Swihart) Johnson, was born in Sioux City, Iowa on February 11, 1924, the daughter of Harry and Alma E. (Worrell) Swihart.

Alma received her nursing degree from Christ Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. On October 4, 1945, Alma married Joe C. Johnson in Boone, Iowa. In earlier years, she worked as a Registered Nurse in the obstetrics department at the Boone County Hospital. Alma later was office nurse for Dr. Gerald H. Sutton in Boone.

She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, yardwork, reading, especially history, and watching old movies. Alma also enjoyed traveling.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joe. Alma is survived by her daughter Peggy Mahoney and husband, Mike of Boone; two grandchildren, Ryan Mahoney and wife, Kelly of Sioux City and Meredith Nerem and husband, Nate of Boone; five great grandchildren, Alice Mahoney, Erin Mahoney, Elliott Mahoney, Carden Nerem and Hayden Nerem.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Boone, Ericson Public Library, or the Boone County Hospital Foundation.
