Obituary for Shirley Irene Winters

Shirley Winters, 90, of the Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines, and formerly of Boone, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Home.

Funeral Services will be Friday, April 13, 2018 at 1:30 P.M., at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, with Rev. Doug Cue officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel, where the family will be present, on Friday from noon until service time.

Shirley Irene (Saddler) Winters was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 28, 1927, the daughter of Beird and Edna (Browning) Saddler. She was a graduate of Boone High School.

Shirley was a home maker for her six children and an in home daycare provider in the Boone area for many years. Shirley had a deep love for children, both her own and in the community. She was a committed foster grandparent involved in the Foster Grandparent Program in the Boone grade schools for seventeen years. During this time as a foster grandparent, she was recognized by Governor Tom Vilsack and the 41st President of the United States, George H. Bush, for her many years of volunteer service to the Boone community. In her younger years, Shirley also enjoyed the time she spent dancing for the Betty Mae Harris Dance Studio, formerly in Boone. Shirley accompanied Betty on a trip to Chicago to teach dance in the city. In her free time, she also was a flower and vegetable gardener, listened to music, played board games, especially Scrabble, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter–in-law, Robin Lovejoy; son-in-law, Tom Dawdy; granddaughter, Amanda Dawdy. Shirley is survived by her six children, Robert Lovejoy Jr. and wife, Eileen of Livermore, California, Vicki Cero and husband, Randy of Ankeny, Craig Lovejoy of Estes Park, Colorado, Debbie Dawdy of Altoona, Joleen Winters of Valdese, North Carolina and Tracy Winters of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

In memory of Shirley, memorials may be directed to the family and will be given to the Special Olympics of Iowa.
